Hey, I have a question - why are we occupying Toronto on a Saturday? There's no trading on bay street and barely anyone in the exchange towers, to my understanding....wouldn't that make protesting on a Saturday somewhat pointless?

This is a really important question so we hope you don’t mind that we publish our response.

We have been receiving this question a lot, and we see the validity in it. However, the goals of OccupyTO and OccupyWallSt. involve the ideas and suggestions of all of those who occupy the 99% of Canada and The World. The goal is to have not multiple causes, multiple organizations, but one organization, one cause, built upon the ideas and suggestions of everyone. That unified movement can only be accomplished through the democratic process of our Assemblies.

However, because of the recent concern about our schedule, we will be opening the discussion to the idea of civil action on the 15th, at least to make our presence known. If the consensus of the General Assembly at the end of the day is to march - legal, media, and logistics will adjust our strategies accordingly. If you want to speak about this at the General Assembly please come out to Berczy Park tonight at 6PM!

Thank you for your inquiry, I hope this answers everything.

September 29th 2011 - Administrative Update

Greetings

This is an update as to where we stand for the occupation of Toronto. Tonight we held an open Administrative Conference to decide a number of elements of the Occupation.

To assist with moving forward the Administrative Workgroup has been divided into three core departments. These departments will be in need of volunteers and support. If any of you are interested in working within these departments, contact us here or through the FB page.

The departments are as follows:

Legal - These are such a vital group of individuals and we NEED more of them. People who are competent and versed in CANADIAN law and the rights of protesters. They also help look after our permits and help orchestrate legal aid for any incidents.

Media and Communications - This will be a huge group of talented individuals. Bloggers, photographers, videographers, internet techs, chat moderators, editors, spokespeople, graphic designers, and street teams! We will handle everything from our web content to our official communications and releases.

Logistics - These people will be key to our success and survival. Working to organize our volunteers, our supplies, our resources. They will also help facilitate the GA and daily occupation schedules.

WE CANNOT MENTION ENOUGH THAT ALL OF THESE DEPARTMENTS ARE IN SERIOUS NEED OF VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORT. ANY AND ALL HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE IS MONUMENTAL!

Secondly, we would like to invite any and all to our first General Assembly at Berczy Park, Thursday evening at 6 PM. The Assembly will focus on development as well as organizational needs. WE ARE NOT DISCUSSING OUR DEMANDS OR POLICIES AS THAT CAN ONLY OCCUR DURING THE OCCUPATION. Again:

Berczy Park, Toronto. Thursday September 29th @ 6PM

Please bring some of your signs, some educational material, pen and paper, good spirits, and video recording devices!

On a personal note. There has been a bit of in-fighting between current organizers and activists. This upsets me a great deal and I’d very much like to rectify the situation right NOW. We embrace any and all organizations/individuals/groups that feels they have a place in this cause. No one will be turned away regardless of political beliefs, race, religion, or ideologies.

With that said, it is important to understand that pushing political parties, religion, -isms, and negative energy divides our forces. It is not because we don’t agree with you or believe in the validity of those ideals. It creates conflict both internally and externally, and creates a divide among the 99%. THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT. They want us to have different ideals and for us to fight among ourselves. Divide and conquer is their game, we must be better at ours. This is going to happen over and over again. But, every time it does we can all learn something, that through carrying an open-mind, through dialogue, through the realization that we are all one - we can see beyond our differences and find our common ground.

What They did not want you to ever find out is that your generation, the generation born between 1980-1990, actually outnumbers the Baby Boomers. They knew that if you ever turned your eye towards political reform, you could change the world.

They tried to keep you sated on vapid television shows and vapid music. They cut off your education and fed you brain candy. They took away your music and gave you Top Ten pop stations. They cut off your art and replaced it with endless reality shows for you to plug into, hoping you would sit quietly by as They ran the world. I think they thought you were too dumb to notice.

Indeed, I thought They had won.

But I watched you occupy the capital of Wisconsin. I see you today as you occupy Wall Street. And I see a spark, a glimmer of the glorious new age that is yours. A changing of the guard, a guard that has stood for entirely too long and needs your young legs to take his place.

I watch you turn away from what is easy and stand up for what is right. I see you understand we as a society are only as strong as our weakest link. I see you wise beyond your years. And I am proud. Give ‘em hell, kids. You are beautiful.

Anyone with eyes open knows that the gangsterism of Wall Street — financial institutions generally — has caused severe damage to the people of the United States (and the world). And should also know that it has been doing so increasingly for over 30 years, as their power in the economy has radically increased, and with it their political power. That has set in motion a vicious cycle that has concentrated immense wealth, and with it political power, in a tiny sector of the population, a fraction of 1%, while the rest increasingly become what is sometimes called “a precariat” — seeking to survive in a precarious existence. They also carry out these ugly activities with almost complete impunity — not only too big to fail, but also “too big to jail.”

The courageous and honorable protests underway in Wall Street should serve to bring this calamity to public attention, and to lead to dedicated efforts to overcome it and set the society on a more healthy course.
